Location: The Hub, 747 SW 2nd Ave. Gainesville, Florida 32601
How to Apply: Please send an email entitled “R&D Scientist, Nanomaterial (Graphene) Characterization” with a resume attached to humancapital@identifysensors.com. Please mention how you learned of the job posting and why you think you would be a good fit for the opportunity.
About the Company
IdentifySensors Biologics is a leading innovator in nanotechnology and biotechnology, focused on commercializing a digital diagnostic platform called Check4. Our mission is to make a significant contribution to the diagnostic industry by offering an entirely new method of molecular detection that eliminates the need for amplification—opting instead for direct digital detection of specific gene sequences. We value curiosity, hands-on learning, and a collaborative spirit in our growing team. We pride ourselves on being scrappy and doing what it takes to get the job done.
Position Summary
The R&D Scientist will be responsible for the comprehensive characterization of graphene as a raw material, in liquid dispersions and as a printed and cured film. Characterization requires a combination of techniques to evaluate its structural and chemical properties. Expertise in the following techniques is required:
Spectroscopy & Microscopy Analysis:
Establish robust methods, standard operating procedures and protocols for conducting sample analysis and material characterization using spectroscopy and microscopy techniques.

Position Summary
The R&D Scientist will be responsible for the comprehensive characterization of graphene as a raw material, in liquid dispersions and as a printed and cured film. Characterization requires a combination of techniques to evaluate its structural and chemical properties. Expertise in the following techniques is required:
- Structural Characterization -- Raman Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).
- Chemical Characterization -- X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS/EDX) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA).
Spectroscopy & Microscopy Analysis:
Establish robust methods, standard operating procedures and protocols for conducting sample analysis and material characterization using spectroscopy and microscopy techniques.
- X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS): Determine elemental composition and chemical states of graphene.
- X-ray Diffraction (XRD): Determine crystallinity, interlayer spacing and stacking order.
- Raman Spectroscopy: Evaluate structural properties, including defects, disorder, and the number of layers in the graphene through characteristic peaks (e.g., D, G, and 2D bands).
- Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR): Identify functional groups and chemical bonds in graphene.
- Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM): Analyze surface morphology and topography of graphene.
- Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM): Analyze layer stacking of graphene.
- Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS/EDX): Obtain elemental composition and distribution of graphene.
- Contact Angle Measurements: Measure the contact angle to assess the wettability and surface energy of the graphene films.
- Surface Free Energy Measurements: Measure the surface free energy of substrates to assess compatibility with printable inks.
- Analyze experimental data to provide insights into the material properties and performance of the graphene films.
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations summarizing the findings and their implications for material development and application.
- Ensure all spectroscopy, microscopy, goniometer equipment is properly maintained and calibrated for accurate and reliable measurements.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues related to the instrumentation.
- Work closely with the R&D team to provide analytical support for various projects.
- Communicate findings and recommendations to team members, stakeholders, and external partners.
- Maintain accurate and organized records of all QC activities, tests, and results.
- Document any non-conformances and participate in root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Education:
- Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Material Science, Chemistry, Physics, Nanotechnology, or a related field with a focus on spectroscopic characterization of nanomaterials, preferrable graphene.
- Proven experience in using XPS, XRD, Raman, FTIR, SEM, EDS, and contact angle measurement techniques.
- Hands-on experience in characterizing graphene or similar nanomaterials is a must have.
- Deep knowledge and experience in spectroscopy & microscopy equipment and techniques.
- Advanced understanding of experimental methods and designs.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in data analysis software (CASA XPS) and tools related to spectroscopy and microscopy techniques.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in a research or industrial setting focused on advanced materials and biosensor applications.
- Knowledge of the chemical, structural and electrical properties of graphene and its material impact on biosensor performance.
- Opportunities for advancement are readily available and include senior chemist roles, quality management, or specialization in a specific aspect of conductive ink technology research and development.
- This role is critical in maintaining the high standards of quality and reliability that our conductive ink products are known for, ensuring they meet both our internal criteria and customer expectations.
